can you charge an ev from home? How does it work?

Home charging is the most common way to charge an electric vehicle. There are two home charging options:

              1. You can charge your EV from a regular three-pin power point connected to an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE)                   cable. This is called a Level 1 EV charger.

             2. Or you can install an EV home charger, known as a Level 2 EV charger. This is a wall-mounted unit with a connected charging                   cable or attachment socket.

One of the biggest benefits of a Level 2 home EV charging station is that it will charge your vehicle in about half the time of a Level 1 charger. This is why most electric car owners opt to install an EV home charging system. Some vehicles are supplied with a home charging station.

But not all EV home chargers are equal. With a smart EV home charger, such as Zappi, you can choose when you charge your electric car and which sources of electricity you use. For example, if your rooftop solar system is producing excess electricity, Zappi can divert it to car charging instead of exporting power to the grid. Or you can instruct Zappi to utilise the most economical combination of grid and self-made energy.

For people who combine EV ownership with a solar PV system, there is the opportunity to charge your car from 100% self-generated renewable energy. This not only eliminates fuel bills and drives higher return on your solar investment, it also moves the planet closer to zero net carbon emissions.

Are all ev chargers the same? Which is the best and fastest?

The principle of charging an electric vehicle is always the same—you connect the vehicle to an electrical power source and energy flows into the vehicle’s batteries. However, the speed at which charging occurs can vary widely between charging systems.

There are three different types of EV chargers:

Level 1 EV charger: Uses AC power and plugs into a standard three-pin power outlet using a Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) cable. This is the slowest charging method and best suited to EVs that have small batteries.

Level 2 EV charger: Uses AC power and attaches to an EV charger commonly used in homes, apartment blocks, commercial car parks and some public charging stations. A Level 2 charger will take approximately half the time of a Level 1 charger to achieve a full charge.

Level 3 EV charger: Uses DC current for super-fast charging, up to 50 times faster than Level 2. Level 3 chargers are only found at public EV recharging stations.

Zappi is a Level 2 EV charging unit. This means you get the convenience of safe, fast charging at home, plus the benefits of an intelligent energy management system that maximises savings and renewable energy use.

Adelaide EV Charger Case Study

The decision to go green...

Dyann's motivation to get solar came down to the financial benefits she knew it could offer. With high quarterly power bills, Dyann knew this money could be going to better use.

Along with solar, Dyann added two Tesla Powerwall’s in order to capture the excess power the system produces. Her family stores that energy to power their home at night, and allows them to have greater independence from the grid.

After a site visit and consultation, our NRG Solar Consultant designed a solar and battery system that forecasted quarterly savings of over $1,400. That's an estimated annual saving of nearly $6,000!

We asked Dyann how her decision to go solar has changed how she uses her power...

"Since the installation of solar I have become so much more in tune with my daily power consumption. I don't just chuck on the dishwasher after a day of dirty dishes - I set a timer and put it on during the day and let my solar system power it for me."

NRG Solar also installed a Tesla charging station at the home...

Dyann explained that, "we can now charge our car with excess power from our solar system, so essentially free petrol. In fact, we have two properties with charging stations in each, so we can drive between each with a 0% carbon footprint!"

This is a fantastic example of how solar energy can be used to power our lives, and move towards a greener future.
